OpenAI Astra can now read and improve model weights directly. Claude's Messages API added server-side conversation threads that cut latency and request size. OpenAI published Pando, their Git backend that handles agent-scale monorepo traffic at petabyte scale.

Models

Claude: Message Threads (Beta)

The Messages API now caches conversations server-side in threads, so subsequent turns send only new messages instead of the full history.

This halves latency and request size for EverRaise's long-running call-analysis agents and any Pipeline conversation bot.

Z.ai: GLM 5.3 FlashX Legal

Z.ai released GLM 5.3 FlashX Legal, a multimodal model (text, image, video) fine-tuned for legal-domain tasks, with a 1M token context.

Legal-domain models are worth tracking for Mackinac's legislative research and any client work touching contracts or compliance.

Apriel Voice 27B Preview: An Open Model for Speech, Reasoning, and Tool Use

An open speech-language model that unifies voice input, reasoning, and tool use in a shared backbone while keeping text and image modalities.

EverRaise's voice agents could gain from unified speech-and-tool models instead of chaining ASR to text LLMs; open weights let us run it.

Better Retrievers, Worse Labels: How Incomplete Relevance Judgments Distort Abstention Evaluation in Conversational RAG

Conversational RAG benchmarks treat contexts without gold documents as unanswerable, but better retrievers find relevant passages the benchmark labels missed, punishing strong systems.

We use RAG abstention thresholds in Pipeline's research agents; this paper says our evals might penalize good retrieval.

Confident Fools or Careful Searchers? A Behavioural Study of When LLMs Search Beyond Their Static Internal Memory

Study of when LLM agents decide to call web search instead of answering from memory; unnecessary searches cost latency and money, missed ones yield unsupported answers.

Botterfly and Pipeline agents decide this on every turn; quantifying the latency-accuracy tradeoff guides our tool-calling prompts.

SecPO: Principled Adversarial Training for Prompt Injection Security

Adversarial training method for prompt-injection defense; Meta-SecAlign with DPO still hits 100% ASR under adaptive attacks, but SecPO improves robustness.

Every agent that reads email or documents is vulnerable; SecPO's training recipe could harden EverRaise's inbound-processing agents.

Releases

Next.js v16.4.4

Next.js v16.4.4 backports bug fixes (Turbopack CSS updates, PPR CSP nonce, fast-jwt swap) ahead of tomorrow's security release.

We run Next.js across SalesKick, EverRaise, and our own tools; the security release tomorrow is mandatory.

Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen

OpenAI's Astra can now read a model's weights, reason about them, and write improved weights back, achieving measurable quality gains on Qwen.

If models can directly optimize weights instead of prompts, fine-tuning becomes a conversation; this changes how we adapt models to client domains.

Anthropic's internal AI use, at retail prices, now exceeds its employee pay

Anthropic's internal token spend at retail pricing surpasses total employee compensation, signaling how AI use scales inside AI companies.

We halved DNS build delay and cut memory use by 85%

Cloudflare optimized DNS zone builds by targeting incremental changes instead of rebuilding everything, cutting memory and delay.

Incremental rebuild patterns apply to any system regenerating output from a large shared input; relevant for Pipeline's document indexing.

Moving our warehouse off DuckDB

PostHog moved its data warehouse off DuckDB due to scaling and operational issues at high query volume.

We use DuckDB for local analytics probes; understanding its limits before we hit them saves a migration later.

OpenAI Developers: Pando, a Git backend for monorepo scale

OpenAI built Pando, a Git-compatible backend that cut push latency 80% and serves nearly a petabyte of Git data daily to handle agent-driven commits.

Agent commit volume will eventually break normal Git; Pando shows how OpenAI solved it and signals what infrastructure we'll need if Codex scales.

François Chollet: \"The most grating aspect of LLM writing is that it tries to turn every single sentence into a punchline, a witty slogan.\"
